Pre-lab assignment and discussion to enhance students' benefit from lab sessions

This paper presents the procedure and results of the action research performed with 300 level Civil Engineering students in order to help students relate the lab sessions with the main course material. The action research involved adding a pre-lab assignment and in-class discussion of the lab session before the lab session. The results showed that this simple change to the teaching practice had a strong positive impact on students' learning.
