Performance Evaluation of a State Machine based Mode Transition Strategy for Microgrids with Power Quality Issues

A proper control strategy is to be designed for the reduction of transients which might occur when the distributed generators (DGs) move from the grid connected mode to standalone mode and vice versa. Most mode transition control approaches proposed in literature deal with ideal grid conditions and balanced loads. The power quality is an important feature in today's power system as the loads are more sensitive and non-linear and unbalanced loads are in the rise in the system. This paper deals with the performance evaluation of a state machine based mode transition strategy under power quality issues associated such as the presence of non-linear, unbalanced, constant power loads and balanced and unbalanced voltage sags and swells. The peak transients in the output powers of a simple two inverter DG based system under seven types of the power quality issues are presented through simulations using Matlab-Simulink software.
