Ku Band Dual Linear Polarized Antenna for Satellite Communication

A Ku band dual linearly polarized Microstrip patch antenna with low profile suitable for satellite communication is proposed in this paper. The vertical and horizontal polarizations are realized by feeding the square patch at two orthogonal positions through the probe. The antenna design has a cavity backing the patch wherein cavity is mimicked using plated through via holes for enhancement of bandwidth, radiation efficiency, gain, and suppression of surface waves. The simulation results show that single radiating element exhibits return loss better than 11 dB. An 8x8 array is also designed with 7%impedance bandwidth which can scan up to ±50° in Azimuth & ±45° in Elevation with reduced cross-polar level <-15 dB across the scan volume.
