Optimal STATCOM allocation and sizing using the sailfish optimizer algorithm

In this paper, a recent optimization algorithm called sailfish optimizer algorithm (SFOA) is introduced to locate the suitable position and rating of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) in a 14 bus IEEE interconnected transmission network to improve voltage profile, and minimize the total real power losses (TRPL) of the system by considering four different loading conditions. The voltage magnitude and power losses are calculated by performing the load flow analysis in 14 bus IEEE interconnected transmission networks by using Newton Raphson's method. Furthermore, a comparative study is done between the SFOA and the moth-flame optimization algorithm (MFOA). The SFOA technique obtains better results than the MFOA. Significant improvement in voltage magnitudes and total TRPL is observed by placing a STATCOM appropriately with proper rating.
