Towards Situation-Aware Decision-Making for Automated Driving

Decision-making in automated driving and mastering the complexity of urban traffic situations as well as the necessity of proofing safety is a challenging task. That has to be considered in the decision architecture and also in the structure of information in terms of the methods of decision-making. The decision-making process for intelligent planning vehicles at a high-level requires a hierarchical and situation-aware representation of the world. Passing on necessary information for the multi-layer decision process depending on the current situation is to overcome the complexity of all situations safely and efficiently. Therefore we present a conceptual framework for situation-aware decision-making that can be integrated into the functional architecture. Furthermore, we show a possible example of a complex driving maneuver.
