A New Modelling Technique for a Switched Reluctance Machine Based on the Mathematical Function for its Inductance Profile

This paper presents a novel circuit based model for the switched reluctance machine (SRM) in MATLAB/ Simulink environment where its stator phase winding inductance is represented by a sixth order polynomial approximately similar to the variable inductance curve obtained experimentally from a 1 hp, 8/6 SRM laboratory prototype. Both the motoring and generating modes of operation are simulated with the proposed model. The model proposed in this work, amalgamates mathematical equations of the SRM with the physical elements like resistances and capacitances to realize the working of an SRM as a generator in association with the wind turbine at various wind speeds. Both the motoring and generator operations are compared with the ones obtained from the in-built non-linear model for the SRM in Simulink. Additionally, experimental results of the closed loop motoring operation of the SRM are presented to authenticate the accuracy of this modelling approach.
