IoT based Smart Helmet with Motorbike Unit for Enhanced Safety

Parents are particularly concerned when it comes to the safety of their child while riding a two-wheeler. Also, they want to know whether their kid is driving properly or not. The project aims to solve these problems. The project has two units, the helmet unit (HU) and a motorbike unit (MU). Both the units communicate via radio frequency (RF). The helmet unit has sensors to determine the pulse rate of the rider, the alcohol content in breath of the rider, and the intensity of vibration. The pulse rate sensor is used to determine whether the rider has worn the helmet or not. The GPS and GSM module in MU send messages with location to emergency contacts in case of any mishap. Each unit has a separate accelerometer for detecting an accident. The sensor on MU helps in ensuring that the rider is sitting properly, not over speeding, and driving safely. If the alcohol content in the rider's breath exceeds a certain amount or an accident is detected the MU turns off the ignition and sends a message with location to the emergency contacts. Simultaneously the buzzer starts beeping and the OLED screen displays the contact details of an emergency contact. A rider safe push button is provided to inform that the rider is safe. A LIDAR sensor on MU helps in making the rider aware of the vehicles coming from behind. Force-sensitive resistors are installed on the handle grip and footrest of the motorbike. These ensure that the rider is sitting properly. The tilt of the bike along different axes is determined via the accelerometer in MU. If tilt along any axis exceeds the threshold buzzer starts beeping and a safety message is displayed on OLED. The MU has an ESP8266 Wi-Fi module. This is used to send the speed and tilt of the bike along different axes to the ThingSpeak server. From there, parents can monitor their kids and ensure safety.
