Transient Stability Analysis of Multi-machine Power System with Hybrid Power Flow Controller

The rise in population and rapid industrial development has directed to large amounts of power consumption, particularly electric power, and to meet the continually expediting power demand, more machinery is being incorporated and, in turn, the stress on the power grid has resulted in stability problems. Several control strategies have been suggested from the concepts of Flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) to improve stability, but these are difficult to implement due to the high cost of the FACTS devices. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) being the utmost flexible of all FACTS Controllers needs to be replaced by an acceptable alternative in order to achieve cost savings along with enhanced transmission system performance. A novel cost-efficient controller called Hybrid Power Flow Controller (HPFC) has been proposed that utilizes previously installed equipment and new Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based controllers that display similar characteristics to UPFC’s. To show its efficacy in transient stability enhancement on the Simulink platform, simulation experiments with a fault in a multimachine system incorporating proposed HPFC have been carried out and results have been compared with UPFC results.
