Throughput Performance Prediction Approach for Wi-Fi Site Surveys

To design reliable wireless connections for the Internet of Things (IoT) and fifth-generation (5G) systems, radio wave propagation simulations and site surveys at customer identified locations will need to be conducted to determine the installation locations and number of wireless base stations in accordance with environmental conditions. We propose here a throughput estimation method using a cube antenna device that can acquire radio waves from all directions. Wi-Fi site surveys in an apartment building and a shopping mall have shown that throughput prediction can be improved by adding more beacon detections related to the direction of arrival of radio waves than are used with the conventional method of estimating throughput using linear approximation from a received signal strength indicator (RSSI).
