A Novel Step-up 7L Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverter and Its Extended Structure

In this work, a novel 7 level switched capacitor based multilevel inverter is presented first. The recommended topology possesses the ability of boosting an output voltage inherently with a boosting factor of 3. The structure uses 1 dc source, 2 capacitors, 1 diode, and 8 number of switching devices. The structure is able to balance the capacitor voltages inherently as well as being able to realize all the output voltage levels simultaneously. After that, the extended version of the proposed structure has been developed which is based on a single dc source. The detailed circuit build-up, operating principle, high frequency modulation strategy, and capacitor selection procedure for 7 level structure have been discussed. A comprehensive comparison study with respect to recently published single source based SCMLI structures shows that the proposed structure needs a lower device count for producing the corresponding output voltage levels. Further, a cost comparison based on a standard cost function presents that the suggested structure is the best cost-effective with lower device count and good voltage gain than others. Extensive simulation studies on 7 level SCMLI structure considering different load conditions show the effectiveness of the topology. Also, a 9-level voltage output waveform has been included at the end.
