Optimal Allocation of PMUs in the Eastern Region Indian Power Grid with Maximum Redundancy

A modern power system requires accurate monitoring and control of the entire network by a smart measuring device. Therefore phasor measurement unit (PMU) plays the important role of a smart tool in the electrical network. The optimal PMU placement (OPP) problem arises due to its high installation cost as it is not feasible to place PMUs at each bus location. This paper presents a binary grey wolf optimization (BGWO) algorithm to place minimum number of PMUs in eastern region Indian power grid (ERIPG) to achieve complete power system observability. The proposed method is also validated on various IEEE standard test buses such as 14-, 30-, and 57-system under normal operation and single PMU loss condition.
