Optimized Energy System Design and Analysis for Sonadia Island

Sonadia is an island of Bangladesh under the district of Cox's Bazar. It is located in Maheshkhali upazila, 15 km north-west from Cox's Bazar. The area of Sonadia is approximately 9 km
²
. Because of its splendid natural beauty, it is regarded as one of the most attractive tourist spots in Bangladesh. It is known that the human life standard relies greatly on the uninterrupted supply of electricity. Ensuring the uninterrupted supply of electricity to common people of such a distant area like Sonadia is a difficult job as grid-connected electricity supply to Sonadia is not possible. A hybrid off-grid electricity generation system can be considered as an appropriate solution of this problem. Wind turbine-solar PV-based, and wind turbine-solar PV-diesel generator-based off-grid hybrid power generation system, are modeled in this paper. The two configurations are compared and analyzed considering Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) and operational cost. Most convenient alternative is selected contemplating all the features.
