Dual-Polarized Cavity-Backed Bow-Tie Slot Arrays for 5G Mobile Handsets

In this work, dual-polarized cavity-backed bow-tie slot arrays are designed at mm-wave band for the mobile handset. The dual-polarized slot antennas can cover the frequency range from 27.3 GHz to 28.2 GHz, with an isolation of above 13 dB between two orthogonally polarized antennas. Two antenna arrays, with each composed of four dual-polarized cavity-backed slot units, are then utilized on the longer metal frames of the handset. The scanning beamwidth for each array is 138° for the gain of above 7 dBi, indicating large coverage area and high gain with dual polarizations. The easy integration with the metal frame makes the design practical for handset antennas.
