Improved RLS Algorithm for Voltage Regulation of Wind-Solar Rural Renewable Energy System

Dispersed rural renewable energy systems (RRESs) are often located near the end of long distribution feeders. The RRESs connected to weak distribution network, cause voltage regulation issue at its point of common intersection with local loads. The erratic nature of renewable sources like wind and solar, renders use of fixed-step line voltage regulators, impractical. Corrective voltage compensation for RRES, through an additional distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) yields better performance, however, with increased cost. This paper deals with the operation of a wind-solar based RRES with integrated DSTATCOM capabilities. The grid side power converter control for RRES is configured to tackle voltage disturbances caused due to renewable power variations and unbalanced and/or non-sinusoidal load currents. An improved recursive least squares (IRLS) algorithm is utilized for estimation of reference grid currents. This control scheme for voltage regulation in RRES fed by a weak grid is validated through simulations in Matlab platform.
