Optimal PMU Placement for Smart Grid: A Technical Case Study

Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is considered as a most robust device that can enhance the observability of modern power system. However, cost constraints puts a limit in its installation across the whole power system. Therefore, it is necessary to choose optimal number of PMUs and their location to achieve the desired power system observability. The paper provides a comparative analysis of various optimal PMU placement algorithms available in the literature. These includes various traditional, heuristic and metaheuristic methods.
