A Laboratory Setup for Synchrophasor Applications

Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) are being deployed in power grids all over the world recently for monitoring and control of power grids. Recently many applications of PMU are being reported in literature for estimation of power system parameters like inertia, damping, online transmission line parameters etc., however, their access to the PMU data from the grid operators is extremely difficult for verification the estimates and application development by research community. Therefore, there is a necessity to develop a laboratory scale PMU data architecture so that new PMU applications can be developed and tested in laboratories. In this paper, we have developed a low cost laboratory scale setup of PMU architecture for development of PMU applications on MATLAB platform, based on an open source software developed by Grid Protection Alliance, Delft University of technology and Power world simulator.
