Spacecraft Docking using Model Predictive Control with STK-based Visualization

In this paper, a strategy is developed for spacecraft relative motion guidance and control for docking applications using Model Predictive Control technique. Docking is the joining of two space vehicles for the transfer of crew and supplies from one spacecraft to another or for the salvaging of a non-cooperative spacecraft. Here, a strategy is developed for spacecraft relative motion guidance and control based on the application of linear-quadratic model predictive control (MPC). The MPC controller is designed for the final docking phase, which starts as the chaser approaches a 1 km box near the target. The initial phases of rendezvous, starting from the phasing stage to the closing stage are simulated in Systems Tool Kit (STK) platform. The system is demonstrated in simulation studies using Clohessy-Wiltshire equations that precisely describe the relative motion of the chaser and the target satellite during docking operation.
