Power Generation using Rooftop Ventilator and Possible Enhancements

In view of the increase in electricity demand, the world is making use of sustainable energy to meet the demand without compromising the ability of future generations. Sustainable energy is nothing but renewable energy sources such as hydroelectricity, biomass, wind, tidal, geothermal and solar energy. Because of high room temperature and the high intensity of sunlight the ventilation is necessary for workshops, industries or factory buildings for cooling purposes. This paper briefs about small scale power generation using a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) which is driven by the rooftop ventilator and discusses the development of a power generation system using a Rooftop Ventilator. This system does not consume any electrical power for its operation. The generator is frameless, having the rewound ceiling fan stator and permanent magnet as the rotor in N-S pattern. The ventilator rotates, the flux of PM moves across the air gap and EMF is induced in the coil which is sufficient to charge 12V battery and later used for household work or LED lighting load when required. After implementing and testing, the prototype has been proved feasible for practical applications and can contribute little to meet energy demand.
