Optimized PID Control Scheme for Three Phase Micro-grid System

This paper presents a performance index based optimization approach for a three-phase micro-grid (MG) system. Conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) tuning rules very often suffer from poor tuning due to their inherent assumptions while the performance index based modern optimization approach provides optimal tuning with improved performance. To justify the statement two state of the art modern optimization algorithms- genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, have been used in this paper to optimize the controller for a three-phase MG system. A comparative analysis between the conventional PID controller tuning rules and the modern optimization-based controller tuning rule has also been presented based on their transient response, reference tracking, and disturbance rejection. The simulations and optimizations have been done in the MATLAB/ Simulink environment.
