A Heatsink Integrated Antenna with Controllable Electromagnetic and Thermal Performance

This paper presents the design and implementation of an antenna with integrated heatsink. The heatsink is connected with antenna through Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) cantilever switches for controllable and optimum electromagnetic (EM) and thermal dissipation performance. The integrated heatsink codesigned antenna can achieve 14 °C and 27°C temperature reduction and controllable reflection coefficient of -23 dB and -15 dB when the switches are OFF and ON, respectively. In addition, the EM performance of antenna is improved with optimized heatsink having an increased gain of 8.1 dB from 5.9 dB.
