A Dielectric Antenna with Rejection Mechanism for Full-Duplex Body Area Network Radios

This paper presents design and implementation of a dielectric resonator antenna for body area network applications with full duplex operation at two adjacent ISM frequencies. The antenna design features a new parasitic radiator arrangement providing a switchable mechanism to reject communication at 2.45 GHz. Rejection level as high as 12 dB was achieved. In order to improve the antenna front-to-back ratio (FTBR), a mushroom-type electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure is placed underneath the antenna to eliminate parallel plate mode and spurious radiation of the aperture feed. Simulation results reveal that the antenna exhibits nearly unidirectional radiation with an FTBR of better than 15 dB and gain of 5.8 dBi.
