Development of RLSA Antenna Based on Substrate Integrated Waveguide

In this paper, the development of Radial-Line-Slot-Array (RLSA) antenna based on Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) is presented. Utilization of the SIW structure for configuring the RLSA antenna is proposed to attain the antenna with reduced dimensions working at the resonant frequency of 5.8GHz for wireless local area network (WLAN) application. The RLSA antenna designed in a circular shape with the diameter of 152mm is fed by using a coaxial type of feeding line method. It is constructed by 6 layers of FR4 epoxy dielectric substrate in which each layer has the thickness of 1.6mm. The structure of SIW is composed of 64 vias arranged concentrically on the edge of the antenna act as a waveguide wall. The simulated result shows that the working bandwidth achieved by the proposed design of RLSA antenna is 300MHz in the frequency range of 5.65GHz to 5.95GHz. Whilst the measured result shows that the realized RLSA antenna has the working bandwidth of 200MHz which is narrower than the simulated one in the frequency range of 5.95GHz to 6.15GHz.
