Stand for experimental studying of regenerative braking

A discussion about a stand for experimental studying of regenerative braking of an electric vehicle (EV) is presented in this paper. As regenerative braking is dependent on many different various factors, the stand is purposed to recreate the electric part of the powertrain system of an EV and study the process of regeneration and its efficiency. The concept layout is presented below by following a block diagram consisting of lithium-ion batteries, two brushless motors with permanent magnets (PMSM or BLDC) coupled with a flywheel between them. One of these motors performs as a traction motor during propulsion and as a generator during regenerative braking. The other performs as a load and as a source of kinetic energy during same operating regimes respectively. Motors are controlled by field oriented control (FOC) with the help of Texas Instruments' (TI) kits - Launchpad F28027F and BootstXL-DRV8301 as well as with TI's software Code Composer Studio (CCS) and their Embedded Coder Support Package in MATLAB/Simulink.
