BC Hydro’s Methodology for Distribution Technical Loss Estimation using Smart Technologies

The introduction of Smart Technologies such as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and other distribution system metering (e.g. SCADA) has enabled BC Hydro to make advancements in its ability to estimate both technical and nontechnical distribution losses on individual distribution assets. This report seeks to detail the logic for calculating such losses using this data and to demonstrate the improvements in distribution loss estimate accuracy that can be achieved as a result.
