Improved Stability Control of Islanded Wind Powered Microgrid Reinforced by STATCOM, Battery Storage System and Pitch Angle Control

Microgrids are much capable to meet power demand locally. However, its reliable and secure operation with the existing network does require a thorough evaluation of associated technical risks. A self-excited induction generator (SEIG) wind-powered microgrid (MG) has gained wide attention from researchers due to its constrained operating conditions. In an islanded mode of wind-powered microgrid, small disturbances and load variations in a three-phase system can cause issues related to frequency and voltage imbalance. This paper is focused on technical limitations in terms of voltage and frequency. A control strategy based on static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), energy storage system and pitch angle control (PAC) is investigated and implemented for stabilization of microgrid transients during the island for scenarios, i.e with and without control mechanism and isolation of common load. Simulations are conducted in MATLAB/Simulink and obtained results demonstrate the efficacy of the developed control scheme.
