Comparison Survey of Mobility Models in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET)

In Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET), the movements of the vehicles will cause dynamic changes in the network topology, which will directly affect the performance of the network Reproducing the realistic traffic flow in the simulation is the basis of the research on the topology and routing protocols of VANET. In this paper, we propose a basic criterion for evaluating a mobility model, and then analyze the characteristics of several existing models and the influence of different choices of models on routing protocol based on traffic simulator VanetMobiSim and network simulator NS2. The simulation results show that a realistic mobility model must be generated in advance since it has a great influence on the performance of the developed routing protocols. Based on the evaluation criterion proposed in this paper, the traditional Random Waypoint Mobility Model (RWP) is not applicable for VANET due to its complete randomness, while Intelligent Driver Model with Lane Changes (IDM-LC) is able to model realistic vehicular motion patterns.
