Clustering-Based Consumers’ Selection to Optimal Placement of the Phase Load Balancing Devices

The importance and necessity of implementing the active distribution networks (ADNs) are directions increasingly recognized by the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs). The ADNs can be implemented only if the current distribution infrastructure will be developed and modernized, increasing the security of electricity supply and the integration of renewable sources. Also, the ADNs will improve energy efficiency and allow consumers to benefit from new technologies and smart use of electricity. In this context, the implementation of the phase load-balancing devices to the consumers represents one step in the direction of the transition towards the ADNs, with benefits on the energy efficiency (low energy losses and a high level of quality and continuity of the electricity supply). A methodology for the optimal placement of the phase load balancing devices (PLBDs) to the consumers has been proposed having as advantages increasing the energy efficiency of the distribution network and the significant reduction of investments. The selection algorithm of the consumers is based on the K-means clustering method. The testing of the methodology has been done in a real low voltage distribution network, having as results an energy-saving of 60 %.
