Power transformers: Mitigate Environmental Impact and Fire Risk Reduction and be prepared for the Unexpected

Showing responsibility for the next generation leads to protecting the environment. This applies to the whole society, individuals, private companies as well as governmental agencies. Raising demand for energy may lead to running the systems closer to the design limits. This change in the mode of operation in conjunction with an aged fleet creates a more a risky environment. Considering the dependency on electricity in today's economic environment, special measures have to be taken in consideration. Newer solutions have to be considered to mitigate environmental impacts and reduce fire risks for new projects. This includes ester fluids as alternative insulation and transformer tanks that have higher rupture resistance. Oil free polymer bushings can mitigate the fire risk for retrofits as well and is not limited to new transformers. Even if all available preventative measures have been implemented, the unexpected can still happen. Mobile resilience transformers can significantly reduce the impact of failures on the reliability and availability of the power grid. Multi-ratio and flexible units are well established in the transmission system and have now expanded to mobile generator step-up (GSU) transformers to react quickly when rapid replacement is needed. In addition to these topics the paper addresses the incorporation of the transformer in the world of IoT and enables automatic indication of abnormalities and optimizing the operation.
