Integration of Flywheel Energy Storage to AGC of Two Area Power System

A two area power system of classical Elgerd model is considered in this work. In the past load frequency control (LFC) operations could not be executed, owing to certain constraints, mainly non-availability of stored energy despite support lent by inertia of generator rotors. Dynamic stability of power system necessarily requires a buffer in the event of sudden load or generation change to save the system from becoming unstable. A step load disturbance representing an outage is introduced at time intervals of 0 and 50 seconds. Following a disturbance, the power system models, one with flywheel energy storage and another without are simulated in MATLAB SIMULINK Environment. It is found that with flywheel energy storage system (FESS) the frequency and tie power deviations get reduced by 93.24% and 60% respectively. Thus, use of flywheel not only dampens oscillations but also makes the system reach steady state stability faster.
