Adaptive Notch Filter Control Algorithm for 5-Level Distribution Static Compensator

In this paper, an adaptive notch filter (ANF) is used to control the 5-level Cascaded H-Bridge Inverter (CHB-MLI) which is used as a shunt active power filter (SAPF) unit. This filter is also used to extract the harmonics and to generate the reference current required for compensation. Due to widespread use of power electronics converters, a large number of harmonics are injected in the electrical supply system. This results in aggravating power quality (PQ) issues at the point of common coupling (PCC). The adaptive notch is the self-tuned filter that extracts the active component of load current under load disturbances. It is designed to mitigates the harmonics in the supply current. The proposed system is designed for a single-phase system using MATLAB/Simulink and thereafter, a scaled-down prototype model is developed using various current and voltage sensors. The control algorithm for the filter is tested using dSpace 1104 processor in the laboratory. The performance results verify the proposed system works satisfactorily under steady state as well as dynamic load conditions.
