Analysis and Design of Wideband Low-RCS Wide-Scan Phased Array With AMC Ground

A 1-D phased array based on a dual-artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) ground is proposed in this letter. Initially, the relationship between the reflection, radiation, and scattering performance of the AMC-based phased and the AMC properties are investigated. Based on the analysis, a hybrid AMC ground is designed with wide zero-phase and anti-phase reflection bandwidths and electromagnetic bandgap characteristics. An eight-element-phased array is then presented. The wideband wide-angle scan is realized by the image theory and bandwidth enhancement of the element antenna, and the wideband low-radar cross section (RCS) performance is obtained by scattering cancellation. Experimental results indicate that the designed phased array support a scan up to 60° in an active reflection band (VSWR <; 3) of 7.5-10.8 GHz and the RCS reduction from 12.0 to 16.0 GHz for TE polarization and from 10.8 to 15.2 GHz for TM polarization, respectively.
