Geomagnetic induced current detection and monitoring

In order to limit the potential for damage which a geomagnetic storm could cause, it is important to understand what level of current is being induced in a power system, when this is occurring and for how long. In conjunction with magnetic field data produced by the British Geological Survey, ScottishPower has developed a monitoring system which detects geomagnetically-induced currents flowing in the neutral earth points of key transmission transformers and can be used by the system operators to manage the transmission system intelligently during geomagnetic storms.
