On the origin of NIR fluorescence in biotissues

Here we aim at elucidating the origin of NIR fluorescence of biotissues, which is ubiquitously observed and rarely used for diagnostical applications. The nature of fluorophores responsible for this signal remains unclear. Here we discuss the possible mechanisms of NIR fluorescence formation based on a set of in vitro and in vivo experiments, focusing on the role of oxidation processes.
