AC Loss Analysis of 35kV High Temperature Superconducting Cable

The categories of AC loss of high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable are summarized in this paper in the first place. The theoretical calculation method is examined by simplifying the traditional cable model. Considering the structure of 3-phase HTS turnkey cable designed for the 35kV km-level HTS cable demonstrating project in Shanghai, its 2D FEM model is built for the simulation of the AC loss of such cable by COMSOL Multiphysics. The simulated AC loss of the designed cable for the demonstrating project is 19.58W/m. The analytical and numerical results are close and in consistent. The laboratory and field test methods of superconducting cable AC losses and their applicable conditions are also discussed. Considering the actual conditions of the demonstrating project, the calorimetry method by measuring the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of liquid nitrogen is suggested for future applications.
