Monitoring the quality of services provided in a telecommunication network by analyzing the statistics of PPPoE packets

Currently the Internet supports the simultaneous use of audio, video and data transfer within one channel (connection). To achieve this, a guaranteed absence of packet loss is required, which, in turn, is highly dependent on congestion control. This article discusses options for monitoring the quality of services and presents alternatives to the generally accepted ones. Methods introducing new protocols are described along with their pros and cons. Considering that for large telecom operators the monitoring of the quality of services provided is an important component of a stable business, the regarded issue is topical and requires new approaches at minimal cost. This paper proposes a method for monitoring the traffic quality by analyzing the statistics of PPPoE (Point-to-point protocol over Ethernet) packets which are already on the equipment at the biggest Internet Service Provider of the Republic of Kazakhstan - JSC “Kazakhtelecom”. The paper proposes types of PPPoE packets that help indirectly determine the quality of services provided and a method for processing PPPoE packets statistics; results obtained during the tests are demonstrated as well.
