Abstract:

The use of LED luminaires in both indoor and outdoor lighting applications has been growing up significantly since the commercial availability of white LED luminaires. Although the useful life of LEDs is about fifty thousand hours, failures of LED luminaires, installed in real-time applications, are observed within much less period. This paper describes a real-time condition monitoring scheme for LED luminaires which is necessary to maintain designed average illuminance and overall uniformity over the target working plane. The working of the conceived scheme is first evaluated by the PROTEUS software where a PIC 18F 4550 microcontroller is used as the main control unit of the system. A hardware prototype of the simulated system is fabricated and tested experimentally. Details of both of the software simulation and hardware implementation are presented in this paper.
