Analysis of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Used for Electric Vehicles Based on Power Matching and Driving Conditions

In this paper, the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is used as the traction motor to achieve high torque, high efficiency and excellent ability of field- weakening for electric vehicles under the conditions of standard city driving cycle and operating range of torque and speed, which can meet the specific requirements of electric bus application. An 80kW non-uniform air-gap IPMSM is designed and manufactured to drive a pure electric bus with a size of 8190*2400*2960mm and a total mass of 11000 kg. The motor is modeled and the rated and maximum torque characteristic curves are studied. The power matching between the IPMSM and the bus is further analyzed. The characteristic curves of the speed, power and torque of the traction motor under the condition of straight road are obtained, which are verified by experiments. The maximum error of rated torque is 4.8% and the maximum error of peak torque is 8.6% between the simulation and experiment of IPMSM.
