Smart Grids and Data – Exploring emerging data-driven solutions for Distribution System Operators

Facilitating the development towards climate-neutrality in the energy sector, digital initiatives and technologies, such as smart grids, are emerging with the aim of reducing emissions, increasing efficiency, and ensuring reliability. The objective of this study is to provide an analysis of the ongoing digitalization of the electrical distribution system and learn how it is helping Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to face the energy transition. Results of a systematic literature review are combined with information from interviews with industry experts to provide an overview of the data sources used by DSOs, the techniques, and the data-driven applications within the electrical distribution network. In total 11 internal and external data sources, 8 techniques, and 11 data-driven applications are identified and discussed. We suggest future research to focus on data-driven business models within the low voltage level, and their relevant user groups.
