Method for Adjusting the Fuel Injection System of a Diesel Engine Using In-Cylinder Pressure Measured through the Indicator Channel

Diesel engines provide mechanical energy to almost half of Russian Railways locomotives. To ensure the high efficiency and low emissions of a diesel engine during the entire period of operation requires periodic adjustment of the fuel injection system. When adjusting of the fuel injection system, it is necessary to provide a power balance between the engine cylinders, without exceeding the barrier parameters for the maximum combustion pressure and exhaust gas temperature. This is achieved due to the equality of the cycle fuel injection and the fuel injection advance angles in all engine cylinders. The existing methods of adjusting the fuel injection system do not allow achieving the required accuracy or are too complicated to implement. This paper presents a method for adjusting the fuel injection mass and the fuel injection advance angle based on the in-cylinder pressure measured under operating conditions via the indicator channel, as well as its theoretical justification and experimental verification. In-cylinder pressure is used to calculate the net heat release characteristics, according to which the relative parameters characterizing the state of the fuel injection system are determined. Experimental studies were carried out on a single-cylinder engine with a hydro-mechanical fuel injection system and showed satisfactory accuracy of the proposed method.
