Dual-Frequency Inductive Switching Cable Fault Locator

The authors' investigation of papers that describe methods and devices for locating cable damage [1]-[15] shows that these papers do not investigate the detection of single-phase faults, which are the most common type of faults in power cables. This, undoubtedly, is a flaw on the part of such methods and devices. Analysis of the devices described in [16]-[20] shows that they can locate any fault in a power cable. However, these units use radioactivity, making them unsafe to operate. Paper [21] investigates how the twist of the wires in a power cable affects the accuracy of measuring distance to the fault by the pulse reflection method. Paper [21] examines the author-developed method and device for detecting single-phase faults. The device presented herein addresses these flaws to a great extent while being capable of accurately locating single-phase faults.
