Detection of Rotor Faults in Salient Pole Generator Using Flux Density Monitoring

In this paper, the air-gap flux density monitoring is proposed to detect rotor faults in a Salient Pole Synchronous Generator (SPSG). A manufactured SPSG of 15 MVA and Finite Element (FE) simulations are used to replicate a reliable signature of the machine. The method aims at combining the harmonic content of power spectrum and polar representation of the air-gap flux density to detect possible rotor failure. The application of the proposed method is performed through FE simulations including different rotor faults such as rotor inter-turn short circuit, static and dynamic eccentricity faults.
