Computational Study of the Effect of Increasing the Fuel Injection Pressure Up to 3000 Bar on the Performance of the Diesel Engine and its Gaseous Emissions

Fuel injection pressure has a great influence on diesel engine performance and gaseous emissions. The paper presents the results of single-cylinder engine modeling with fuel injection pressure up to 3000 bar. 3D modeling was performed in Fire ESE Diesel. The results show that increasing fuel injection pressure improves the combustion process. With the fuel injection pressure from 1500 to 3000 bar, the NOx volume decreases by 23.2%. However, NOx did not meet the emission level of EURO VI standard. Therefore, it is necessary to use exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) together with ultra-high fuel injection pressure. When using EGR at 27%, the NOx volume reduces by 93% and NOx emissions meet EURO VI standard at all values of fuel injection pressure from 1500 to 3000 bar, without exhaust after-treatment measures. Nevertheless, at 0% EGR break specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increases by 4.9% indicator power decreases by 4.5% and at 27% EGR the BSFC increases by 4.7% and indicator power decreases by 4.1%.
