Study of Noise and Vibration in Wound Rotor Resolvers

Resolvers are position sensors that are widely used in harsh environments. It means in polluted surroundings with wide temperature variations, and high vibrations resolvers are preferred to optical encoders that are their main competitors. Those features are commonly justified according to the electromechanical structure of resolvers as the special kind of electrical machines. In this paper different sources of vibration and noise of resolvers are discussed and different mitigation techniques are presented. Furthermore, the natural frequencies of the stator and rotor of the studied resolver are determined using modal analysis. The electromagnetic analysis is done using transient finite element method and its validity is examined by experimental tests.
