A Value Creation Analysis of Implementing an Intelligent Active Mobility System for the Elderly Market

Active mobility is an excellent way to promote health and a better quality of life amongst the ageing population. It can produce a myriad of health benefits including reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, as well as reduced obesity. As a result, this will also mean lower healthcare costs and other societal and economic benefits. Active mobility also substitutes to vehicle use. Promoting active mobility amongst the elderly, therefore, can also help reduce gas emissions, pollution and climate change. In order to encourage elderly people to engage in active mobility, we can make use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). We propose the development of a smartphone app that makes use of a Smart Pedestrian Network (SPN) navigation system. The proposed system provides elderly people with relevant information, such as safe and suitable walking routes and events for social activity. As noted, by successfully implementing SPN, a plethora of benefits can be achieved. However, if stakeholders are to be convinced that investing in the proposed system is worthwhile, the benefits that accrue from active mobility must be quantified. This paper proposes a framework in order to quantify such benefits, and show that the system will indeed create value and it is a worthwhile investment.
