Results of EMC experimental studies of 5G network transmitters and receivers of fixed-satellite service in 3.5 GHz band

The 3.5 GHz band is one of the most popular frequency bands for initial phase of 5G network development. The 3G Partnership Project, in its initiative embodied in Release 15 and Release 16, has identified three bands - n48, n77 and n78 for applications of various frequency channels at 3.5 GHz with TTD duplex mode [1], [2]. However, the exploitation of 3.5 GHz band seems to have entailed some issues related to the electromagnetic compatibility, in particular, with regards to compatibility of FSS earth station receivers in space-to-Earth links. The following allocation of 3.5 GHz band to fixed-satellite service (FSS) took place in compliance with Article 5 (No. 5.431) of Radio Regulations [3] and ECA36 Footnote of The European Table of Frequency Allocations and Utilizations [4].The experimental studies conducted by the authors in order to assess the degree of interference impact deriving from 5G transmitters on Earth Station (ES) receivers of fixed-satellite service within 3.5 GHz band have made new contribution to elaboration of protection criteria to determine the EMC between FSS ES and 5G.Thus, for the purposes of settling this EMC matter by territorial location limitation of 5G transmitters, the researchers are proposing additional technical methods, focusing on additional filters application for FSS receivers, hereby reducing negative impact of interference 5G transmitters on FSS ES receivers within 3.5 GHz band.
