Study of the Possibility of Reducing the Attenuation Coefficient of Two-Wire Circuits

Symmetrical cable lines, consisting of conductors with a circular cross-section, are used in local networks, access networks and video surveillance networks. The most widespread are symmetrical twisted-pair cables. The maximum transmission distance over such a cable is strongly limited by attenuation; therefore, it is of interest to develop new designs of cable circuits that provide a decrease in the attenuation coefficient. The main requirements for the designs being developed are to ensure the coordination of the cable circuit with the existing active equipment by maintaining the magnitude of the characteristic impedance and ensuring compatibility with the elements of detachable connectors. The fulfilment of the latter requirement restricts changing the dimensions of the cable chain. The paper analyzes the possibilities of using a new design of the symmetrical cable circuit with conductors having a D-shaped cross-section, patented by Wayne Charles Hopkinson and Trent Mitchel Hayes. It is shown that such a design makes it possible to significantly reduce the attenuation coefficient, and hence to increase the transmission distance.
