Automated Gate control with backup systems at Level Crossing

The objective of the paper is to propose an unmanned automated level crossing system with secured backup subsystems. The system comprised of two major parts; Nearest Railway Station Control Room (NRSCR) and Level Crossing System (LCS). Train detection IR (TDIR1 and TDIR2) sensors of LCS, placed at a certain distance from the level crossing (LC), detects incoming and outgoing of a train. The Raspberry Pi of LCS embedded with Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) obstacle detection algorithm, detects the obstacle at the LC via a camera of LCS. If unfortunately, processing of SSD algorithm by Raspberry Pi of LCS failed to detect an obstacle, then it is done by obstacle detection IR (ODIRs) sensors of LCS, placed at the LC. In the nastiest case, if the processing of the SSD algorithm and ODIRs failed to detect obstacle or if there exists any mechanical issue, Raspberry Pi of LCS will signal the NRS CR to control the situation manually. When TDIR2 detects train then gates will open and a red signal is given to train. Since, when compared to manual, automation is efficient and accurate. But few issues exist in adopting it, like the obstacle may get trapped in between the track and failure of automation due to some technical and mechanical faults, which lead to accidents. Hence automated backup systems are compulsive for the already proposed automated systems at LC. Therefore the system was introduced to prevent accidents and also to grip all types of circumstances at LC. The whole process is done with AI and IoT technology.
