Impact of Microgrid Connected to A Conventional Power System on System Frequency and Control Strategy

Conventional power generation scenario has been changing due to depleting reserves of conventional fuels and the corresponding adverse environmental effects. Microgrids (MG) in combination with Conventional Power System (CPS) are the need of the hour. But, Power system interconnection of MG to CPS impacts the system frequency and thus the controllers in conventional system alone may not be able to handle the changes in frequency. This paper presents a droop plus PID control strategy to test the impact of MG interconnection using Conventional Power System Control (CPSC) and Microgrid Control (MGC) to achieve minimum frequency deviation for Hybrid Power System consisting of a reheat thermal power plant and an AC MG. MG consists of a Wind Turbine Generator(WTG), Fuel Cell (FC), Battery Energy storage system (BESS) and a Diesel Generator (DG). Control strategy has been tested and implemented through simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.
