Development of an Intelligent Control Platform for Vehicle-to-Grid Systems

The VIGIL (`VehIcle to Grid Intelligent controL') platform, a comprehensive communication and control platform, is developed for managing Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems and electrical networks. The VIGIL consortium has successfully demonstrated at two sites in Aston University campus the capability of the VIGIL platform to control electric vehicle (EV) charging/discharging and to manage building energy dispatch whilst considering building/EV owner requirements and electrical network constraints. Bidirectional power flows between EVs, buildings and electrical networks were monitored and controlled in real-time. Full control of how, when and the rate at which EVs are charged/discharged with the simultaneous consideration of multiple constraints was achieved by the VIGIL platform. Demonstration results also provide valuable information to EV users, grid operators and building managers on how EV batteries degrade over time and how the V2G technology affects grid operation.
