Analysis of 5-Phase IM Drive with Reduced Switch 5-Level Inverter

This paper presents performance analysis of reduced switch multi-level inverter fed 5-phase IM drive. The mathematical model of 5-phase IM is developed in MATLAB. A 5-phase inverter with reduced number of power switches is utilized to improve the drive performance in terms of reduction in harmonics, less ripples and better stability. Multilevel inverters are realized by many techniques such as cascaded H Bridge, flying capacitor, neutral point clamp capacitor, and many other techniques. In this paper an “asymmetric H Bridge” 5-level inverter is used to feed to five phase IM drive. An open loop v/f control is implemented to control the drive. A detailed comparative analysis is presented by exhaustive simulation result with conventional two levels fed 5-phases IM.
